There are many multiplayer games out there on the market, but there are a small number which have reached heights of incredible popularity amongst gamers both young and old.
World of Warcraft is one of the best known games in the gaming and entertainment industry. The Warcraft series began in 1994 with the release of 'Warcraft: Orcs and Humans', and was rapidly followed by 'Warcraft II: Tides of Darkness' (1995) and the Warcraft II expansion pack, 'Beyond the Dark Portal' (1996). The third game in the series, 'Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos,' (2002) also had an expansion pack: 'The Frozen Throne' (2003). One expansion pack ('The Burning Crusade' - 2007) has already been released for the fourth Warcraft game ('World of Warcraft' - 2004), whilst another is due for release later this year ('Wrath of the Lich King' - 2008). The entire series revolves around the notion of a fantasy world overrun by mystical and magical creatures. Players are able to move through the game as a variety of different breeds or species, including humans, gnomes, elves and dwarves.
Another incredibly popular multiplayer game is 'Counter-Strike', a shooter style game which requires intense concentration, military-based strategy, and a trigger-ready finger. The game revolves around the premise of players having to undergo operations and tasks which will allow them to progress to new stages. Fans of 'Counter-Strike' can spend hours online each day playing the game, and there are even professional leagues and competitions for the elite, dedicated gamers.
