multiplayer gamingYou'd be surprised just how easy it is to get involved in multiplayer gaming.  If you want to play online you can use either your computer or your game console (PlayStation 3, XBox 360, Wii, and so on).  Most recent games consoles will do all the work for you - they'll connect you up, find competitors, and even monitor the progress of the game.  Computer based multiplayer games are slightly different however, and may take more time to set up and maintain.  Generally you will need to ensure you have a relatively fast internet connection, up-to-date graphics and video cards, a fast computer processor, and plenty of computer memory.  If the games allow voice communication with other players, you will also want to obtain a headset (earphones and a microphone).  You will also have to sign up for (and perhaps purchase) your game membership.

Once you have ensured that you are set up properly for multiplayer gaming, it may be worth doing a little research on the history of the game you're interested in playing, the techniques that other players use to succeed, and the general rules and regulations that govern the state of play.  Some long-standing multiplayer games may not have 'official' rules, but may be controlled instead by 'gentlemanly conduct' - this means that the majority of the players agree that there is certain behaviour that is unacceptable, whilst other moves or techniques are acceptable.  Although you could learn as you went along, it is always advisable to have a basic grasp of the rules prior to beginning the game - after all, you don't want to be branded a 'n00bie'!
